Flea Market Find Transformation: Drab to Fab!

I’m sharing another one of our treasures from Canton today.  Sometimes you have to have a keen eye when you’re digging through flea market finds.  I spotted this piece and instantly knew it had potential:

base

What do you think it is? Our guess was a light fixture of some sort.

Whatever it is, I convinced my friend to buy it.  For $6 I knew she could use it for something.  It didn’t take long for me to suggest using it as a base for a bell jar/cloche or terrarium.

She brought it home and introduced it to Mr. Heirloom White:

She created a glaze by mixing some brown craft paint with water:

Rubbing it in the crevices really highlights the great detail.

Next, she assembled the elements for her cloche.  A plate from TJMaxx made the perfect base:

Of course a glass bell jar, purchased in Canton:

Having a variety of items allows you to change it up every so often.  For now, she chose to use the small fern, fleur de lis finial, and ceramic bird.

And, voila! The perfect table centerpiece!

By the way, are you totally in love with this table runner?!? My friend made it! I’ll share more details tomorrow.

  3. This looks like it used to be one of those big umbrella holders. You got that at Canton? You must not be far from there in LA. I am in Dallas so not far for me. Looks like I need to go with you because you have a great eye.
Love this project and table runner. Do share.....PS I got my zebra print fabric at Hobby Lobby. Thanks for stopping by.

  4. Christy,
I love what you did with the little "base" and I adore the bell cloche, I still don't have one. The only ones that I have seen are $30 or more and I cannot justify spending that kind of money. But that looks wonderful the way it is done. And the runner is great, it's like the one that I made and am considering making more and selling them at a craft booth.

  11. My mother in law just gave me one of these glass domes with a base and I was trying to figure out what to do with it. I think I will paint the base and find some treasures to put in it!! I came across your blog from DIY Day at SPTL.

  21. I love how this turned out. The base is actually a stand for the woodsy Christmas tree's. You take the black iron stands off and slip this between them so you don't need a tree skirt. I have several and I know how I'm going to change them out before Christmas!
