Transformation Thursday: DIY Personalized Jewelry Box

For some reason I am drawn to these vintage jewelry boxes, perhaps they remind me of the hours I spent playing with my grandmother’s vintage jewelry, which she kept in a similar jewelry box. I picked up these two at separate estate sales for $1 and 50 cents each.

These babies needed a facelift, don’t ya think? Enter the spray paint:

IMG_2165Much better! I spray painted the larger one silver and the smaller one lavender. They were still kinda plain, so I decided to keep on going by adding my initial and some bling.

I added the border to highlight the slightly raised detail border that still showed through a little.

I just used silver craft paint to paint the border and initial, then outlined them using a paint pen. I printed out an initial and used carbon paper to transfer it to the top of the box. Since I am an impatient crafter, I didn’t even tape off for a clean line, but it still turned out okay. If you wanted to do a real professional job I would recommend taping off.

Now they’re right at home in my guest bedroom, but I keep moving them around. Tell me which spot you like best.

Price My Space: Guest Bedroom

I’m joining The Nester for her Price My Space Party today. I decided to feature our guest bedroom, since I re-decorated it last year on a budget and can pretty much remember how much everything cost. You can see a full post on our guest bedroom (including a before photo) here. So here we go……

guestbrprice

1. Mirror: Pier One: $45 It was on clearance, plus I got an additional discount since there a few small places where it is chipped. But you can barely notice them.

2. Lamp: Base, Target, $24.99; Shade,Ross, $7.99

3. Headboard: DIY, about $50 (faux suede fabric, batting, foam, and framing material)

4. Bed Linens (duvet, 2 shams, bedskirt): LinensNThings.com, $40; I already had the sheets

5. Nightstand: DIY, about $10 for supplies (the original nightstand was FREE since it was a hand-me-down from my mom, and the mirror pieces were FREE since I found a large mirror in our attic). Here's a post on the transformation.

6. Accent Pillows~2 Square Silver, JCPenny, $12.50 each; Silver Rectangle, Burlington Coat Factory, $5.99; Purple & Silver Rectangle, Target, $4.99 (clearance!!)

1. Window Treatment: Burlington Coat Factory, $40 total for 2 curtain panels, $12.99 for rod

2. Vanity: DIY, about $15 for spray paint and new handles (original cost FREE since it was mine when I was a little girl)

3. Accessories: Oblisque, Dillard’s, $12.50; Frame, Hobby Lobby, $6; Lamp, Marshall’s, $24.99 (maybe cheaper, I can’t remember!); I had all the other accessories

So, go get your calculators & add it all up. I’ll wait…….

Did you get $325.44???

Add in a few other miscellaneous items not pictured and I’d say we redecorated this room for about $375 or less. Not exactly cheap, but not bad either, considering I’ve seen some bedding sets alone go for that much. I don’t think I paid full price for anything (besides supplies). And we gave the room a whole new look that I am absolutely in love with. I hope I don’t get tired of all the silver and mirror anytime soon!

Transformation Thursday: DIY Mirrored Nightstand

Editing to join the DIY Surprise Party! Check out all the other cool furniture makeovers!

Today I’m joining Gina at The Shabby Chic Cottage for Transformation Thursday.  I’ve decided to feature the end table in our guest bedroom.  I did this little transformation (with the help of my handy hubby) back before my blogging days, so I don’t have any in-progress photos, just before & afters.

This end table had been with us for a few years, it was a hand-me-down from my mom, I think it came from Bombay Co.  Here it is in our old house, used as a TV stand:

It had been serving its purpose just fine as a nightstand in the guest bedroom, but once I redecorated the room, it definitely needed a facelift!  I really wanted a piece of mirrored furniture for the room, but didn’t want to pay the high price.  Then I remembered the previous owners had left a huge unframed mirror in the attic!  I convinced hubby to drag it down and we cut a piece for the top, the sides and the front of the drawer.  The rest I just spray painted silver!  I also applied silver leaf to the shelf, but you really can’t tell.  Oh, and I also made a little knob out of small round craft mirrors.

Total cost:  Probably less than $10 for a can of silver spray paint, a tube of mirror mastic adhesive, and a pack of little round craft mirrors!  Bonus:  The guy at Lowe’s just GAVE me the glass cutter they had been using since they were out of stock of the ones that they sold!  (Guess I was looking especially cute that day!)
Go check out Gina’s blog and share your own transformations!

Show Us Where You Live - Guest Bedroom Edition

Once again, it's time for Show Us Where You Live Friday over on Kellys Korner blog. This week features guest rooms, and I'm excited to show mine off! Particularly because we just re-decorated this room about a year ago on a budget and I'm very happy with the way it turned out. I really wanted to modernize the room. I love all the contemporary mirrored furniture and accessories that are popular now, but they are usually so expensive! Luckily I was able to DIY alot of things and score some great deals on clearance items!

Soooo....here we go! Here's a look at how the room was decorated before. I do love the brass bed, but it was my grandmother's, and it just wasn't our style anymore:

And here's what the room looks like now:

As you can tell, we switched the furniture arrangement around, painted the walls and woodwork, and got all new linens and accessories.

My dear husband helped me make the gorgeous brown faux suede headboard. He made a frame using 1x2's and we covered it in a layer of foam, batting and fabric. I actually found that a twin-sized egg crate mattress topper worked perfectly and was cheaper than buying a piece of foam at the fabric store. We pulled it all tight and stapled it in the back, I sewed on the buttons, then we attached rings to hang it on the wall like a picture.
This was my vanity from my bedroom when I was a little girl. As I mentioned, I'm going through a mirror/silver phase, so I spray painted it silver to modernize it a bit:

Of course, I had to incorporate a fleur de lis somewhere in the room! I embellished this tin with a fleur de lis and accented it with rhinestones:

I also updated the end table by painting it silver and gluing mirrors to the top and sides. The lamp came from Target and the shade came from Ross.

Here's a fantastic mirror I found at Pier One at a great discount because it has a couple small (barely noticeable) chips.

As for the linens....I picked up the duvet set for $40 on linenandthings.com (before they went bankrupt!) and the curtains at Burlington Coat Factory. The silver square pillows came from JCPenny, the smaller silver one from Burlington, and the patterned one on super-clearance at Target. Most of the other accessories came from places like TJMaxx and Ross, and I got the mirrored oblisque on clearance at Dillard's.

I keep this glavanized bucket in the corner with extra blankets and pillows:

Well, that's it! Are you ready to come visit? I'm accepting reservations through the summer!
Have a great weekend!
